Too
Full
(A
poem for Advent)
So it begins in some
wilderness absent
of Christmas trees
and carols
Why such a bland start
to a journey that
leads to a
waiting manger
…seems strange
But the God who calls to
us from the desert
of our too full lives
knows us well
We want to unwrap
the waiting present
too soon but
we are not yet ready
There must be some
waiting and weaning
for we are addicted
to our “too much” lives
So a crusty prophet will
again call to us
to prepare a way
for “the Way”
His not so “joy to the world”
cry will challenge
our too full expectations
requiring some emptying
Mary is waiting with her
dream struck Joseph
and Bethlehem’s too full
inn waits too
For now the Advent call
is for us to wait
and watch and wonder
for we are too full
to receive God’s gift
But we can make room
if we listen
to
Advent’s words
in the wilderness
“Prepare the way of the Lord,” but
there must be
a place and
we are too full
So again, yes again
we need Advent
